Black Forest Labs logo, developer of FLUX.1 Kontext

Updated October 20, 2026. Checked model availability, official pricing and the distinction between hosted and downloadable versions.

FLUX.1 Kontext is Black Forest Labs’ image-editing and generation model family. It combines an image with written instructions, making it useful for revising a picture without starting again from a blank prompt. Black Forest Labs describes Kontext as a previous-generation model; its hosted versions remain available. Check the current model catalog before choosing it for a new project.

What FLUX.1 Kontext can do

  • Instruction-based editing: describe a change to an existing image, such as changing a jacket’s color or adjusting the scene around a subject.
  • Successive revisions: refine an image over several steps, checking the result after each edit rather than combining every request at once.
  • Reference consistency: use the input to guide the appearance of characters, objects or style across edits. Consistency is a capability to evaluate, not a promise that every detail will remain identical.
  • Design exploration: compare alternatives for an illustration, product concept or campaign scene before choosing a direction.

Editing is generative. An apparently local request can still affect details elsewhere in the image. Compare faces, hands, logos, proportions and any lettering with the original before using a result publicly. Do not rely on a generated image to preserve exact product specifications or approved brand typography.

Pro, Max and Dev: choosing the right version

Version Access and practical distinction
Kontext [pro] Hosted through the Black Forest Labs API and Playground. A starting point for evaluating an instruction-based editing workflow.
Kontext [max] A higher-quality hosted option at a higher per-image price. Compare results on your own representative images rather than assuming it improves every edit.
Kontext [dev] Released downloadable weights for a 12-billion-parameter image-editing model. The official model card documents local workflows including Diffusers. It is no longer accurate to describe this release as an upcoming private beta.

Downloading Dev requires reviewing its access conditions. Its model license and the rules for using generated outputs are distinct; the model card discusses commercial uses of outputs, but this does not mean unrestricted commercial use of the model itself. Read the license attached to the release before selecting it for a business deployment. Local operation also requires suitable hardware and setup.

Official pricing

The Black Forest Labs help center lists Kontext Pro at US$0.04 per image and Max at US$0.08 per image. One credit equals US$0.01, so these correspond to four and eight credits. The listed rates apply to its API and Playground; a batch multiplies the base price by the number of images. Third-party apps can set their own charges and limits. Check the current checkout or provider pricing before buying credits. A ten-credit signup bonus or a universal five-credit editing price has not been verified for this review.

A practical editing workflow

  1. Choose the official Playground or an integration that identifies the exact Kontext model it uses.
  2. Supply an image you have appropriate rights to use. Avoid uploading private or confidential material without checking the provider’s data terms.
  3. Write a specific instruction, for example: “Change the blue jacket to dark green; keep the person and background consistent.”
  4. Inspect the entire output, not just the requested change. Revise one issue at a time and keep the original available for comparison.
  5. Check the intended output size and export workflow. Kontext produces approximately one-megapixel images; it should not be confused with newer models offering higher-resolution output.

Who it suits, and what to check first

Illustrators, designers and creative teams may find Kontext useful for exploring variations and maintaining a visual reference across a sequence. It is less suitable when an edit must preserve every pixel outside a selected region or when exact text and product geometry are mandatory. This overview is based on official documentation, not an independent performance benchmark or a hands-on endorsement of every partner application.

Start with Black Forest Labs’ official Kontext page. A similarly named third-party website should not be mistaken for the model developer’s own service.
