A short, kind answer is often enough when a friend invites you out and you want to decline. These 60 original message templates are for new, casual invitations: coffee, dinner, a group outing or a spontaneous meetup. Choose wording that is true for you, then adjust the details before sending.

Choose a reply that matches the invitation
Use a brief reply when you do not want to explain. Mention a practical reason only if you want to share it and it is accurate. Offer another date only when you actually want to meet. A warm tone does not require a promise to make plans later.
- Quick, clear replies

These messages do not cover cancelling a commitment you already accepted or declining a wedding invitation. Those situations may need different details. If you are arranging the gathering yourself, see our party invitation message ideas instead.

When you genuinely want another time
- I can’t do coffee today. Would next Tuesday work for you?
- I’m passing on dinner tonight, but I’d like to catch up another day.
- This weekend doesn’t work for me. Are you free for a walk next week?
- I’m not joining the group outing. Would you like a quieter catch-up sometime?
- I can’t make lunch on Friday. I could do Wednesday if that suits you.
- I’m staying in tonight. Would you like to plan something for later this month?
- The concert isn’t for me, but I’d enjoy getting coffee with you instead.
- I’m not free this afternoon. I can suggest a couple of times tomorrow.
- I’ll pass on the restaurant this time. Would a picnic another day appeal to you?
- I can’t say yes to this plan. May I get back to you next week about another date?
Make the message sound like you
Keep the answer clear. If you mean no, “I’ll pass this time” is clearer than “Maybe” or “I’ll see.” You can thank your friend without explaining your schedule, finances or feelings.
Remove any reason that is not true. “I’m choosing a quiet night” is an option only if that describes your choice. Otherwise, use a simple decline. You do not need to invent another commitment.
Make an alternative specific, if you want one. For example, change “another day” to “a walk next Thursday” only after checking your availability. If you are unsure, do not promise to reschedule just to soften the reply.
Match the booking details. If your friend is buying tickets or reserving seats, say clearly that you should not be included. Reply before their stated deadline when you can.
Two small personalization examples
Without a reason: “Thanks for inviting me, Sam. I’ll pass on dinner this Friday. Hope you have a lovely evening.”
With a genuine alternative: “I’m not free for lunch tomorrow, Alex. Would a short walk on Sunday afternoon work?”
These are writing suggestions, not a promise about how someone will respond. Keep the parts that fit your friendship and leave out the rest.
