Historical Poe start screen with its logo, prompt box and navigation sidebar

Poe is Quora’s platform for using AI bots and creating custom AI tools. Its main appeal is access to different model providers in one place, with a shared points balance for usage. It can suit people who want to compare writing approaches, explore creative tools or build a small assistant, provided they check each bot’s cost and data handling.

Updated October 15, 2026. This overview is based on official Poe documentation and public product pages. We did not run a generation test, create a bot or purchase a subscription.

What can you do with Poe?

The Poe directory separates official bots from community creations and includes search, image, video, audio and programming categories. It lists models from providers including OpenAI, Anthropic and Google. Read the individual bot’s description rather than assuming every bot has the same capabilities or access to current information. The directory changes, so an older model list is not a reliable guide to what your account can use today.

For everyday work, start with a narrow task: rewrite a paragraph, explain a programming error or suggest alternative outlines. For multimedia, choose a bot that explicitly supports the required output. An image generator and a video generator are different tools; a general chat bot’s ability to discuss video does not establish that it can generate one.

Poe’s service terms warn that responses can be inaccurate or outdated and that bots and features can change. Treat generated material as a draft. Check facts, citations and any claimed real-world action before relying on the answer.

Custom bots and interactive apps

Poe offers several creation routes, with different levels of complexity:

  • Prompt bots: Choose a base bot and add instructions for its role, tone or task. The prompt-bot guide also describes optional knowledge sources and citation settings. This configures an existing model; it is not the same as training a new model.
  • Script bots: These combine models and custom Python logic in workflows hosted on Poe. Script Bot Creator supports building through conversation, with testing and revision before publication.
  • Server bots: Developers can run custom logic on their own server. Poe’s Creator Guide distinguishes this from Poe-hosted script bots and also documents API-based connections.
  • Canvas apps: These are interactive web applications hosted inside Poe. The Canvas guide describes using App Creator or supplying code, including interfaces that call AI models.

Choose the simplest route that meets the need. Repeated writing instructions may only require a prompt bot; a multi-step process or custom interface may need more development and review. A working prototype still needs checks for incorrect outputs, unexpected costs and inappropriate data exposure before others use it.

Free access and compute points

Poe uses compute points rather than one universal message allowance. According to its current FAQ, free users receive a daily allocation that resets every 24 hours without rollover. A bot may charge a fixed amount or a variable amount based on the input and output it processes.

Check the bot’s Rates panel and first-message estimate before use, then review message information or Points History for actual usage. Importantly, Poe’s October 12, 2026 FAQ says per-message budgets do not apply to official bots or bots built on them. Do not treat that budget setting as a universal spending cap.

The purchase guide describes monthly and annual subscriptions, with additional access and higher point allowances. Plan points arrive daily, monthly or both, depending on the subscription. They generally do not roll over unless the plan says otherwise. Separately purchased add-on points are usable for one year and are not refundable, transferable or redeemable for cash.

There is no single dependable number of articles, images or videos that a point balance will produce. Compare the rate of the specific bot you intend to use and the kind of request you will send, rather than judging value from the subscription price alone.

Before paying, check your selected plan’s total, currency, taxes, renewal period and point-renewal schedule. Poe’s Terms of Sale specify US dollars or another currency shown at purchase, with billing country affecting the charge currency. Subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled; purchases through Apple or Google are managed through that provider. This overview does not quote an account-specific checkout price.

Privacy: check the shield on each bot or app

Poe’s Privacy Center makes an important distinction:

  • Full shield: Data is shared with model providers or services within Poe’s sandboxed environment by default. Poe says model providers do not use these interactions for training.
  • Half shield: Data may also reach the bot or app’s developer and external resources it accesses. These interactions may be used for training.

Permissions can change an interaction’s shield. Check its message information. Chats are ordinarily hidden from other users unless shared or used in group chats, but providers still receive content and have different retention periods.

The privacy policy says API-based bot and app developers may view and store chats on their servers for training. Account identifiers are generally withheld from providers and developers, with exceptions for group-chat identification, but information you type or upload still reaches the services powering the interaction.

Memory can share context across model providers you use. Deleting a chat may leave information in its memory summary; delete memory separately when needed. Review these controls and the bot’s policies before using confidential material.

Which devices can run Poe?

Poe is available through its website. Its official download page also lists iOS, Android, macOS and Windows apps. Use that page to reach the official downloads, and check device requirements in the relevant store or installer.

Example: compare repair instructions

This is a fictional, untested planning example. Imagine a community workshop preparing a short guide to repairing a loose wooden chair. The organizer has already checked the repair steps and wants clearer wording.

  1. Prepare a short, non-confidential list of verified steps and tools.
  2. Select two suitable text bots and inspect their rates and privacy shields.
  3. Give each bot the same instruction: “Rewrite these verified steps for a first-time reader. Keep the sequence unchanged. Do not add tools, materials or safety claims. Flag anything unclear.”
  4. Compare whether each draft preserves the supplied facts, defines unfamiliar terms and stays readable.
  5. Have a knowledgeable person check the final instructions before distributing them.

The goal is to compare editorial usefulness, not declare one model universally better. Our guide to evaluating AI beyond benchmark scores explains why task-specific criteria matter. Record the actual points consumed alongside the amount of revision needed. A cheaper response can be poor value if it introduces details that take time to correct.

Who should consider Poe?

Poe is worth considering when variety matters: you want to explore multiple AI approaches or create a task-specific bot without committing to a single provider’s interface. It needs closer evaluation when your priority is a predictable per-task cost, strict handling of confidential information or a particular feature that only some bots support.

Start with a representative, non-sensitive task. Judge the result against your own acceptance criteria, then decide whether the available models, point costs and privacy conditions fit your work.
