Updated October 15, 2026. This article was originally published on August 21, 2023. It revisits three productivity ideas from that period: improving prompts, checking calculations, and finding current information. The legacy plugin system described in the original guide has been discontinued. OpenAI now marks its 2023 plugin announcement as outdated, while today’s ChatGPT uses the word “plugins” for a different, current product framework.

This update is based on provider documentation, not hands-on installation tests. The retained cover’s “essential productivity plugins” headline is historical promotion from 2023 rather than a current recommendation.

The useful question is still straightforward: which part of your task needs help? A prompt editor can clarify instructions. A computational tool can evaluate an expression. Web search can locate evidence. Treating those as separate jobs makes it easier to choose a tool and check its output.

What changed?

In 2023, ChatGPT plugins connected the assistant to external services. OpenAI also provided its own browsing tool, which used Bing’s search API. The original article grouped Prompt Perfect, Wolfram, and Bing together, but that framing blurred the difference between third-party plugins and OpenAI’s browsing capability.

Today, OpenAI describes plugins as packages that can include reusable instructions called skills, connected apps, and other capabilities. A connected app supplies access to a service’s information or supported actions. Availability depends on the particular plugin, account, plan, region, and workspace controls. An old screenshot or matching product name does not establish that an earlier integration still works.

Prompt Perfect

The original recommendation focused on rewriting short or unclear requests. In a May 2023 developer announcement, Prompt Perfect’s creator described a plugin that could refine prompts prefixed with “perfect.” That was a description of its historical behavior, rather than a universal command for ChatGPT.

The developer-linked Prompt Perfect website now presents a ChatGPT plugin, a browser extension, and a custom GPT as separate offerings. Their current descriptions should be checked individually. This article does not establish continuity of an old installation, account, subscription, or feature set.

The transferable lesson is to inspect a rewritten prompt before using it. Has it preserved your objective? Has it added assumptions you never supplied? Extra detail helps only when it reflects the task. A longer instruction that invents an audience, budget, or deadline can produce a polished answer to the wrong question.

Wolfram

Wolfram served a different purpose: computation. Its original announcement explained how ChatGPT could send queries to Wolfram|Alpha and Wolfram Language, then use the returned results. That page now carries a notice that the old ChatGPT plugins were discontinued.

Wolfram’s former GPT landing address now leads to its MCP offerings, which connect compatible AI applications to Wolfram tools. The provider distinguishes cloud, local, and enterprise options. Its cloud option handles individual requests and does not support persistent sessions or external file uploads and downloads. Those differences matter when planning a workflow.

A computation tool still needs the right problem. Check units, assumptions, the expression submitted, and the interpretation of the result.

Bing and web search

The original claim that readers could install a “Bing Search plugin” was misleading. OpenAI’s 2023 browsing implementation used Bing to retrieve information; readers should not follow that sentence as instructions for installing a third-party plugin.

For current web research, consult ChatGPT’s web-search documentation. ChatGPT can search automatically when a question benefits from current information, and users can select Search manually where available. Answers may include citations. Open the cited pages and check whether they actually support the claim, particularly when dates, locations, or conditions matter.

For the intervening history, our SearchGPT retrospective covers OpenAI’s 2024 search prototype. It provides context for the development of search rather than instructions for restoring the old Bing interface.

Where GPTs fit

Custom GPTs combine instructions, reference material, and selected capabilities for a particular purpose. They also have their own transition underway. As checked on October 15, 2026, OpenAI’s migration FAQ schedules retirement for December 11, 2026, with February 11, 2027 applying to qualifying Enterprise workspaces with approved deferrals. Follow the notice for the relevant account or workspace. Existing GPT access does not automatically grant access to a replacement plugin.

A practical example

Imagine a fictional ceramics studio preparing a public workshop. It has 24 participants and wants to order clay in 10-kilogram bags. Each participant needs 1.2 kilograms, and the organizer allows 15 percent extra for waste.

  1. Clarify the request: specify participant count, material per person, waste allowance, bag size, and the required output. Ask the assistant to identify missing inputs before recommending a purchase.
  2. Check the arithmetic: 24 × 1.2 × 1.15 equals 33.12 kilograms. Four bags provide 40 kilograms. Preserve that working so another person can check it.
  3. Research the purchase: use current supplier pages to verify the clay type, bag size, availability, delivery terms, and price. Record the date checked.

This is an illustrative workflow, not a product test or a real supplier quote. The calculation cannot determine whether the material is suitable, and a search result cannot confirm an order. The organizer must check those decisions separately.

Choose by the task

Start with the smallest capability that solves the problem. Before connecting a service, review its developer, permissions, data handling, and costs. Compare a revised prompt against your original, reproduce important calculations, and read the underlying sources. The lasting value of this 2023 guide is that division of work, with today’s product details checked before use.
