Meta chief strategy officer Dave Wehner is leaving the company after 14 years to become chief financial officer of Fireworks, an AI inference startup valued at $17.5 billion. Wehner announced the move himself on X on Friday, November 6, and the news was first reported by The Information and confirmed by CNBC.

“Fireworks has the right mission for the moment,” Wehner wrote. “I have become increasingly bullish on what they are building. There is a remarkable depth of technical talent here, coupled with a very practical focus on what customers need.”

In a separate post, Wehner thanked Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg. “I announced earlier this week that I am leaving Meta. I am deeply grateful to Mark Zuckerberg for showing what a truly founder-led company can achieve. I am incredibly optimistic for Meta’s future.”

Meta chief operating officer Javier Olivan praised Wehner in a statement to CNBC. “Dave helped guide Meta through tremendous growth and complexity over 14 years, and brought disciplined thinking to some of our hardest company-level decisions,” Olivan said.

Fireworks chief executive Lin Qiao said Wehner will be responsible for scaling the startup’s finances and operations. Writing on LinkedIn, Qiao said: “Dave told me he wanted to get back to a smaller company where he could build toward a big impact again.”

A 14-year run at Meta

Wehner joined Facebook in 2012 and became chief financial officer in 2014, a role he held for eight years. In November 2022, he moved into the newly created chief strategy officer role, and Susan Li took over as CFO. Wehner was Meta’s first chief strategy officer, overseeing strategy and corporate development.

His departure removes one of Meta’s longest-serving senior executives, a figure who steered the company’s finances through its shift from a social network into an AI infrastructure spender. Meta has not said who will take over the strategy role, and neither company has given a start date for Wehner’s new job.

What Fireworks does

Fireworks, founded in 2022 by former Meta and Google engineers, runs an AI inference and model-training platform that helps enterprises customize and run open models with their own data. Qiao previously led Meta’s PyTorch team, which built one of the most widely used frameworks for developing machine learning models.

The scale of the business explains why Fireworks wanted a CFO with Wehner’s background. The company processes more than 40 trillion tokens every day, most of it from models customized by clients, and counts Uber, Shopify and Doximity among its customers.

In July 2026, Fireworks raised $1.505 billion in a Series D round led by Atreides Management, Index Ventures and TCV, valuing the company at $17.5 billion on a post-money basis. By mid-2026 it had reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate, up from $100 million in about 16 months. The company is backed by Nvidia and Sequoia Capital, and Business Insider has reported it is in early talks to raise new funding at a possible $30 billion to $40 billion valuation.

Why it matters

The move is a signal about where senior tech talent sees the next opportunity. Wehner held a senior post at one of the world’s most valuable companies and chose to leave it for a four-year-old startup. The bet is on inference, the business of serving models cheaply and quickly, rather than on building the models themselves.

For Fireworks, the hire lands at a sensitive moment. In October, the company disclosed a security incident in which an unauthorized third party used internal Fireworks credentials to access environment variables in evaluation jobs across a limited number of customer accounts. Fireworks said it detected no unauthorized access to customer models, datasets or inference traffic.

For Meta, the loss is institutional knowledge rather than a finance gap. Wehner had already handed the CFO job to Li in 2022, but his exit still takes a strategist who helped shape the company’s biggest spending decisions, including its multi-billion-dollar AI infrastructure buildout, out of the room.
