Perplexity AI is a search and research assistant that combines web information with AI-generated answers and source links. It can help you get an initial explanation, identify sources to read and develop follow-up questions. A citation is a starting point for verification, not a guarantee that an answer is correct.
What can you use Perplexity for?
- Explore an unfamiliar topic: ask for an overview, then open the sources behind important claims.
- Plan research: identify terminology, competing explanations and questions that deserve a closer look.
- Work with documents: available upload and analysis tools can help with summaries and questions about files, subject to your plan’s limits.
- Prepare a draft: use your research to outline a report, study note or article, then check quotations and add your own analysis.
Features and practical limits
Perplexity offers cited answers, conversational follow-up questions and research tools. Its free Standard plan includes basic search and limited access to uploads and advanced search. Pro adds access to advanced models and higher usage allowances. Feature availability and allowances differ by plan; the official plan comparison lists limits for search, research and uploads. Do not assume that a paid subscription makes every feature unlimited.
This is most useful when you want an initial research path and are willing to inspect the evidence. It is less suitable as the final authority for a consequential decision, an exhaustive literature review or a claim requiring a precise quotation. Check the original publication, its date and whether it supports the particular statement being made.
Pricing and app availability
The official Perplexity website lists core search as free and individual Pro at $20 per month or $200 per year. The annual figure is the yearly subscription amount, not a monthly charge. The source displays a dollar sign; local currency, taxes, promotions and app-store billing should be checked before subscribing. Other plans and API access have separate terms.
Perplexity is available on the web and through official iOS and Android apps. Start from the provider’s website to find its apps. Availability in every regional storefront has not been checked for this review.
A useful way to check an answer
- Ask a specific question and include the time period, place or audience that matters.
- Open the sources supporting the answer’s central claims. Prefer original research, official documentation or the relevant organization’s own announcement.
- Compare dates and definitions. Two sources can appear to disagree because they describe different periods or products.
- Ask a follow-up about missing evidence, then revise your conclusion yourself. Do not cite the AI summary as though you read every underlying source.
Before uploading a file, check that you have permission to share it and review the service’s current privacy settings and terms. Do not upload passwords, API keys or other credentials. Upload confidential material only when your organization’s rules and the service arrangement permit it.
