Artifact News is no longer a standalone news app. Yahoo acquired Artifact in 2024 and incorporated its technology into Yahoo News. This page explains the former product, the acquisition and the options available to readers today. Read Yahoo’s official acquisition announcement.
What was Artifact News?
Artifact was an AI-powered news discovery app created by Instagram cofounders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. Its recommendation system adapted to readers’ interests to help them discover relevant stories. Yahoo’s acquisition announcement also described top-news access, link sharing and tools intended to reduce clickbait. These describe the former Artifact product, rather than features available through a current Artifact subscription.
What happened to Artifact?
Yahoo announced the acquisition on April 2, 2024, stating that the transaction had closed on March 29. The announcement said Artifact would no longer operate independently and that its personalization technology would be integrated into Yahoo products.
On June 13, 2024, Yahoo introduced a redesigned Yahoo News app and confirmed that Artifact’s technology had contributed to its development. This was a Yahoo News release, not the return of the standalone Artifact app. Read the Yahoo News launch announcement.
Where can readers find similar features now?
Yahoo News is the directly documented destination for Artifact’s technology. Yahoo’s current News app page advertises a personalized feed, AI-powered audio briefings, article takeaways, clickbait-headline rewriting, and controls for blocking keywords or publishers.
Its current getting-started guide also describes saving articles for later, searching by topic or publisher, reading history and notification preferences. Importantly, the guide says takeaways are available for some articles, not every story. The integration does not establish that all former Artifact features, saved items or accounts transferred to Yahoo News.
What should former Artifact users check?
- Use the current official app: follow Yahoo’s own download links and check availability for your country and device. Old Artifact download buttons should not be treated as a route to a supported standalone service.
- Choose your topics again: Yahoo’s guide describes selecting at least five interests and offers both Yahoo-account sign-in and a guest option. Check the resulting feed instead of assuming your old preferences are present.
- Review personalization settings: Yahoo says its app requires activity-based content personalization. If you prefer not to allow that setting, its help page points to Yahoo News on desktop and mobile web. Read Yahoo’s personalization guidance.
- Check the original reporting: use summaries as an entry point, then open the underlying article for context, dates and sources. Compare coverage when a story matters to a decision.
Pricing and app availability
There is no current standalone Artifact plan to recommend. The previous claim on this page about free access plus premium subscription features was not supported by the official sources reviewed and has been removed.
Yahoo markets its News app as free and provides links for iOS and Android. That is a separate Yahoo offering, not an Artifact subscription. Check the current store listing and any separately presented offers before subscribing or paying. See Yahoo’s official app information.
Review scope and limitations
This is a source-based lifecycle update, not a hands-on app test. We checked Yahoo’s public announcements and current product documentation. We did not test sign-in, recommendations, saved-data access or account migration. The sources establish the acquisition and technology integration; they do not provide a verified recovery procedure for an individual former Artifact account.
