Khanmigo AI is Khan Academy’s AI learning companion for guided tutoring and teaching support. It connects conversation with Khan Academy learning content across mathematics, science, coding, history, humanities, and writing. Its intended approach is to help learners reason through a problem rather than simply complete an assignment for them.

Access depends on the product and audience. Free teacher preparation tools, paid family tutoring, free classroom Writing Coach, and district subscriptions have different eligibility rules. A free Khan Academy account alone does not establish access to every Khanmigo feature.

What learners, parents, and teachers can do

The learner product offers guided practice, writing feedback, debate, coding feedback, and career or college-preparation conversations. It supports speaking instead of typing and having responses read aloud. The page continues to describe GPT-4, but model branding is less useful than checking the actual educational workflow and its limitations.

Parent accounts can enable access for up to ten children under 18, assign work, track progress, inspect chat history, and receive moderation alerts. Some accounts already attached to an active classroom may require support before parent activation.

Teacher tools help prepare lessons, rubrics, exit tickets, activities, and differentiated learning materials. They remain drafts for an educator to review for curriculum fit, accuracy, accessibility, and individual student needs. The free teacher preparation account does not itself grant general AI-tutor access to a whole class.

Pricing and eligibility

Offering Current price Important scope
Khanmigo for Teachers Free in supported locations Teacher tools; the published pilot covers 180+ countries and territories
Parent or learner tutoring US$4 monthly or US$44 annually, excluding sales tax Adult purchaser must live in the U.S. and have a U.S. billing address
Classroom Writing Coach Advertised free for U.S. teachers and their students Separate guided-writing offering; not blanket free access to every tutor feature
District Enterprise Starter US$10 per student per year Displayed for 1,000 or fewer student licenses
District Enterprise Contact the district team More than 1,000 licenses, with tailored implementation

The teacher-access update lists 30+ additional experimental languages and regional exclusions. This wider teacher availability does not remove the U.S. restriction on consumer tutoring. Learners under 18 need access enabled by a parent or an eligible school implementation.

Writing Coach and school deployment

Writing Coach guides planning, drafting, and revision while giving teachers insight into the writing process. It advertises originality checks and feedback rather than producing a finished essay for the student. Its public page now promotes free U.S. classroom signup, although an older waitlist section remains below; confirm the route offered to your school.

The district pricing page markets both Enterprise editions to U.S. schools and districts and includes unlimited Writing Coach. Starter uses teacher-directed rostering and on-demand training. The larger Enterprise edition adds automated Clever or ClassLink rostering, tailored training, and implementation support. Khan Academy’s underlying lessons and independent learning platform remain free.

Safety, privacy, and learning expectations

According to the community guidelines, connected teachers or parents can view a student’s Khanmigo interactions, and flagged conversations involving minors can trigger notifications. Do not describe those conversations as confidential from the supervising adults.

Start with a specific learning goal, ask for explanations and hints, and compare the reasoning with class materials or another trusted source. Avoid sharing private details or treating an AI response as authoritative. The service’s guidance and safeguards do not guarantee correct answers or improved grades.
