On September 7, 2023, Tencent introduced Hunyuan to enterprises in China for testing and application development through Tencent Cloud APIs. In its launch announcement, the company emphasized Chinese-language processing. That was a vendor description, not independent proof that Hunyuan outperformed OpenAI’s ChatGPT across all tasks.
Chinese-language users represented an important audience for domestic enterprises such as Tencent. This historical article does not use China’s population as a verified count of native Chinese speakers or as the size of an addressable customer market.
Tencent, also known for its all-in-one application, WeChat, presented Chinese-language performance as a strength. At the Shenzhen summit, vice-president Jiang Jie reportedly said Hunyuan had surpassed GPT-4 on Chinese university entrance-exam questions. This was a company-reported comparison, not evidence of general human-level ability or superiority to every ChatGPT version.
The original article also cited CLUE, a Chinese-language understanding benchmark. Earlier reports of Hunyuan’s performance on that benchmark should not be treated as a fresh September 2023 comparison against ChatGPT or proof of general superiority to humans. The primary leaderboard page did not expose its historical result rows during this review, so exact scores are not repeated here as verified technical results.
An additional advantage claimed by Tencent was a lower rate of errors or “hallucinations”—incorrect output presented as factual. Jiang’s reported 30–50 percent reduction concerned comparisons with then-common open-source models, not every competing service. The claim was not independently verified here and should not be read as a current error rate.
Claims that ChatGPT was uniformly worse at Chinese punctuation, terminology or factual accuracy require a specified model version, test set and method. The launch claims alone did not establish that broad conclusion, so this article does not present it as a measured comparison.
Tencent’s September 2023 announcement described Hunyuan as having more than 100 billion parameters and more than 2 trillion tokens in pre-training data. Parameters are learned numerical values in a model, not units of language; tokens are the pieces used to represent text. For historical comparison, the largest GPT-3 model had 175 billion parameters and was trained for 300 billion tokens in 2020, while the Llama 2 family released in 2023 included a 70-billion-parameter model. These counts alone do not determine quality, and a training-token budget is not necessarily the number of unique tokens in a dataset.
Tencent also said its Model-as-a-Service offering, introduced in June 2023, provided more than 50 industry-specific solutions across 20 industries. Separately, Hunyuan had been connected to 50 Tencent products, including Meeting and Docs. The solution count and the internal product-integration count describe different things.
Tencent was not the only Chinese tech company developing AI models in 2023: Baidu, SenseTime Group, Zhipu AI, Alibaba and JD.com were also part of that competitive landscape. Access to advanced chips and US export restrictions formed part of the uncertainty discussed at the time; this is historical context, not a statement of current rules or a prediction that every company would face the same outcome.
